How difficult is the hike to Humantay Lake?

The hike is rated moderate — approximately 3 km each way with 300m of elevation gain, reaching 4,200m at the lake. The trail is steep in sections, particularly in the upper half, but it is well-maintained and completed every day by people of varying fitness levels. The main challenge is the altitude, not the technical difficulty of the path. Travelers who have acclimatized in Cusco for 2 days generally find it hard but very manageable. If you have any heart or respiratory conditions, consult your doctor before booking.

How many days should I acclimatize in Cusco before this tour?

We strongly recommend at least 2 full days in Cusco before doing the Humantay Lake tour. The lake is at 4,200m — 800m higher than Cusco — and ascending to that altitude without acclimatization is a common cause of altitude sickness on this route. A good acclimatization day option before Humantay Lake is our Sacred Valley Tour, which takes you to lower altitudes (2,800m) while you adapt.

Is the entrance fee to Humantay Lake included?

No — the entrance fee to the Soraypampa / Humantay Lake area is S/25 soles per person (approximately $7 USD) and is paid directly at the gate. This fee goes to the local community that manages the site. Please bring cash in Soles as there are no card payment facilities at the trailhead.

Can I rent a horse to reach the lake?

Yes. Horses are available for rent from local community members at the Soraypampa trailhead. The cost is approximately $25–30 USD each way, paid directly in cash to the horse owner. Horses can be arranged for the ascent only, the descent only, or both ways. Let us know in advance if you are interested and we will advise the local handlers to expect you.

What time does the tour start and finish?

Hotel pickup in Cusco is between 4:00 and 4:30am. The early departure is necessary to allow time for the drive, breakfast in Mollepata, the hike and return. You can expect to be back in Cusco between 5:00 and 6:00pm, depending on the group pace and traffic conditions.

Is the tour suitable for children?

The tour is not recommended for young children (under approximately 10 years old) due to the high altitude and the physical demands of the hike. Older children who are physically active and have no altitude issues can complete the tour successfully. If you are bringing children, we recommend spending extra days acclimatizing in Cusco first and considering the horse option for the ascent.

What is the best time of year to visit Humantay Lake?

The dry season (May to October) offers the most reliable clear skies, making the lake’s colour and the surrounding mountain views at their most vivid. June, July and August are the most popular months. The wet season (November to April) brings afternoon rain that can make the trail muddy and obscure the mountain views, but the landscape is greener and there are far fewer people. The lake is open and beautiful year-round.

What should I do if I feel altitude sickness during the hike?

Tell your guide immediately. Our guides are trained in altitude sickness recognition and first aid, and carry supplemental oxygen on all departures. Mild symptoms (headache, slight nausea, fatigue) are common and often pass with rest and water. If symptoms are moderate to severe, the guide will slow the group pace, administer oxygen if needed, or arrange for descent to a lower altitude. Never push through serious symptoms — descent is always the most effective treatment.

Can I combine the Humantay Lake tour with the Salkantay Trek?

What should I bring for the Humantay Lake tour?

We recommend bringing comfortable hiking shoes, warm layers and a waterproof jacket, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, some snacks, and a small daypack. Weather in the Andes can change quickly, so it’s best to be prepared for sun, wind, and cold.
