Highlights – Cusco, Sacred Valley, Rainbow Mountain & Machu Picchu
Cusco City
Cusco, located in southern Peru at 3,300 meters above sea level, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known as the “Navel of the World.” Once the capital of the Inca Empire under Pachacutec, Cusco is home to incredible archaeological and architectural treasures, including Machu Picchu, Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Pucapucara, Tambomachay, Pisaq, and Ollantaytambo. Today, these sites form part of Peru’s rich cultural heritage and are a must-visit for any traveler exploring the Andes.
Beyond its archaeological importance, Cusco offers stunning natural attractions. Adventurers and nature lovers can explore Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), Humantay Lake, the Salkantay and Ausangate mountains, all accessible through guided excursions from the city.
Maras & Moray Salt Mines
Just an hour from Cusco, in the town of Maras, you can visit two of the most iconic archaeological attractions: the Moray Agricultural Terraces and the Maras Salt Mines. Moray features a large circular terrace with 16 levels, each with distinct microclimates that were used as an agricultural laboratory by the Incas. The salt mines consist of hundreds of small pools where mineral-rich water evaporates under the sun to produce natural salt, still harvested today for culinary and medicinal purposes.
Sacred Valley of the Incas
The Sacred Valley of the Incas was a central area for Inca civilization and agriculture. Stretching from San Salvador to Ollantaytambo along the Vilcanota River, it features breathtaking mountain landscapes, traditional villages, and key archaeological sites like Pisaq and Ollantaytambo. The valley is also the main gateway to Machu Picchu and the Amazon jungle, offering activities such as canoeing and guided cultural tours.
Rainbow Mountain – Vinicunca
The 7-Color Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is located southeast of Cusco in the Vilcanota mountain range, reaching an altitude of 5,200 meters above sea level. Its vibrant colors result from centuries of geological processes, where minerals such as iron, copper, and sulfur oxidized under natural elements like wind, water, and sun. Previously covered by ice, the mountain revealed its stunning rainbow hues as the glaciers receded. Hiking to Rainbow Mountain is a challenging but rewarding experience, ideal for travelers seeking breathtaking Andean landscapes.
