The wet season (November to April) brings afternoon rain and cloud that can obscure the mountain, and the trail becomes muddy in sections. That said, the mountain is open and visited year-round — some travelers prefer the wet season for fewer crowds and greener surroundings. Early morning departures (which Aremika always uses) give the best chance of clear conditions before afternoon cloud builds up.

What is the Red Valley — and can I visit it?

The Red Valley (Valle Rojo) is a secondary viewpoint approximately 30 minutes beyond the Rainbow Mountain summit, featuring dramatic red and burgundy mineral slopes of equal visual impact to Vinicunca itself. It is less visited and often completely empty. The extension adds about 1 hour to the total hike time. If you are feeling strong at the summit, ask your guide about visiting — it is one of the best-kept secrets on the route and we highly recommend it for those with the energy.

Can I rent a horse to reach the summit?

Yes. Horses are available from local community members at the trailhead. The cost is approximately S/60–70 soles per section (ascent or descent), paid directly in cash to the horse owner. This option is popular with travelers who are less confident about the altitude, have knee issues, or simply prefer a different experience. Let us know in advance if you are interested.

How many days should I acclimatize before this tour?

We recommend a minimum of 2 full days in Cusco before doing the Rainbow Mountain tour. Rainbow Mountain at 5,200m is the highest point on any Aremika day tour — significantly above Cusco’s own 3,400m. A good way to use your acclimatization days is the Sacred Valley Tour (day 1, at lower altitude) followed by Rainbow Mountain on day 3 or 4.
