Qeswachaka Bridge Tour 1 Day from Cusco | Last Inca Rope Bridge

Full Day Tour of the Last Inca Bridge

Every June, in a valley southeast of Cusco where four Quechua communities meet beside the Apurímac River, something extraordinary happens: hundreds of local families gather to demolish and completely rebuild an Inca rope bridge using only hand-twisted grass — just as their ancestors have done for over 500 years. The Qeswachaka Bridge is the last living example of this ancient Andean engineering tradition, and visiting it is one of the most genuinely cultural experiences available anywhere in the Cusco region.

Aremika Expeditions’ Qeswachaka Bridge Tour 1 day from Cusco takes you to the bridge itself for a crossing and guided explanation of its history and construction, then continues through a remarkable landscape of four Andean lagoons — Pomacanchi, Acopia, Asnaqocha and Pampamarca — with a traditional boat ride on the Gran Amaru, birdwatching, a stop at the Yanaoca viewpoint and a local lunch. This is a full-day cultural and natural immersion, not just a visit to a single attraction.

🌉 UNESCO recognized: The annual rebuilding ceremony of the Qeswachaka bridge was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2013 — one of only a handful of living Andean traditions to receive this recognition.

Itinerary

Day: 01 Qeswachaka Inca Bridge Tour

Pickup from your hotel in Cusco begins at 4:00am, with departure heading south toward Yanaoca through the high Andean plateau. The drive takes approximately 2 hours through open puna grasslands with views of snow-capped peaks and the first of the Andean lagoons. On arrival in Yanaoca at around 7:00am, the group enjoys a warm local breakfast before continuing to the day’s main destinations.

The first stop after breakfast is the Yanaoca viewpoint, where your guide explains the history of the Túpac Amaru II revolution — one of the most significant uprisings against Spanish colonial rule in South America, which began in this region in 1780. On clear days, the Pabellones volcano is visible from the viewpoint, offering an excellent panoramic introduction to the landscape of the Canchis province.

By mid-morning the group arrives at Qeswachaka — the last hand-woven Inca rope bridge still in use today. Stretched 28 metres across the Apurímac River at approximately 3,700m, the bridge is rebuilt entirely from q’oya grass by four local Quechua communities every June in a ceremony that has continued uninterrupted for over 500 years. Your guide explains the construction technique, the cultural significance and the community tradition before the group crosses the bridge. Time at the bridge: approximately 1 hour.

After the bridge, the tour continues to the Urinsaya lagoon on the shores of the Gran Amaru, where participants can join a traditional artisanal fishing activity and take a scenic boat ride on the Gran Amaru vessel (entrance fee S/10 soles, paid locally).

The afternoon route back to Cusco passes through a string of four spectacular high-altitude lagoons — Pomacanchi, Acopia, Asnaqocha and Pampamarca (Tungasuca) — where birdwatchers can spot Andean flamingos (parihuanas), wild ducks and other native species. A traditional semi-buffet lunch is served at a local restaurant before the return journey. The group arrives back in Cusco at approximately 7:00pm.
